Extra Credit

I generally don't give out extra credit assignments, however I feel this is worth it. In our classroom there is a timeline of the history of the United States. As we go throughout the year we will be talking about many events that you may find interesting, and want to know more about them. You can receive extra credit by researching these events and creating a visual representation and a brief description of one of these events for our classroom timeline.

Details

  • There must be a visual representation of the event which can be done in any way you want. Some ideas would be a high quality print, re-make of a photograph, a drawing, painting, or book art. Anything that you can imagine, the more creative the better.

  • There must also be a description of the event written out, this must be detailed and to the point, because it can't be long but still needs to be informative. it needs to be typed and in a font size larger then 24.

Before you begin your extra credit you need to be aware of a few details.

  1. This is NOT a requirement, this is extra credit.

  2. I have an extremely high standard for this extra credit, just because you did the work doesn't mean I have to give you any points. Points will be determined by the quality of work.

  3. Once you turn it in, it becomes the property of Mr. McArthur. DO NOT buy a expensive piece of art and turn it in and ask for it back. Anything that goes up on the timeline stays there until it is replaced by superior work.

  4. The project must be smaller then 8x18 text included. (see the attachment below)

  5. It is possible to replace another piece if you produce a higher quality product. I will be the judge, however if your piece is replaced you will not lose your extra credit.

  6. if you are interested in creating an event PASS OFF THE EVENT with Mr McArthur, BEFORE you begin. If you do not there is no guarantee it will make it up on the timeline or gain you any extra credit. All decisions on what goes up are made by Mr. McArthur.

Over two hundred years ago this nation was involved in a war, the war of 1812. The British, were winning the war, sailing up the Eastern seaboard. Fort McHenry was in their path, the commander of the fort had a large American flag commissioned to fly in front of the Fort. The Admiral in charge of the British fleet was offended but the flying of this massive flag;  he said, "Take that flag down. You have until dusk to take that flag down. If you don’t take it down, we will reduce you to ashes."

There was a young amateur poet who was being held prisoner on board a British ship, by the name of Francis Scott Key, who witnessed the battle as the sun fell, and the bombardment started. Bombs bursting in air, all night long it continued. At the crack of dawn, he ran out straining his eyes, but all he could only see dust and debris. Then there was a clearing, and he beheld the most beautiful sight he'd ever seen: the torn and tattered stars and stripes, still waving.

America went on to win that war and to retain our freedom, And if you'd gone onto the grounds of Fort McHenry that day, you would have seen at the base of that flag? The bodies of soldiers who took turns propping up that flag through the battle of the previous night. They would not let that flag go down because they believed in what that...flag symbolized. And what did it symbolize?

One Nation, under God, indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for all.
